Smile Til It Hurts: The Up With People Story
Lee Storey 2008
Categories: Documentary Competition Features
Run time: 82 min. | USA | Language: Enlgish
Set in the riotous 1960s, this documentary explores the intricacies of Up With People, a clean-cut singing youth group who believed they could change the world. They were a cultural phenomenon spanning 40 years, reaching 20 million people, singing in 47 languages to 3,600 worldwide communities, performing for popes and kings, as well as four Super Bowl half-time shows. Smile Til It Hurts weaves together members’ heartfelt perspectives and private secrets with 40 years of Up With People’s vast archive of footage, photos and news clips into a smile-drenched, entertaining and thought-provoking romp through the underside of politics, cults and money.

A brilliant tapestry of archival footage, personal movies, and insightful, honest interviews that throws the 70’s, corporate goodwill, and the Up With People group into sharp, shadowed relief.

I loved this film! Mostly told by people involved in "Up With People" through the years, it gives interesting accounts from foot soldier level to the people at the top who moved the pieces around the chess board. Born out of a cultish group "MRA" born in England, and spun off into UWP in the 60's, it became the establishment's voice to counter the activism at that time. Further transitioning into the 70's as a corporate pawn to facilitate the spawning of multi-national "INC's" from Europe to China. A very interesting story of the power of politics and a finely crafted message delivered through music. Add it to your "must see" list.

No red carpet for SMILE in 2010!
Hello all:

After much consideration and anxious awaiting, it's now official: SMILE 'TIL IT HURTS did not get short-listed for the 2010 Oscars. Still, it's amazing that we made it to the pool of applicants! How rare that is indeed!? What a challenge and incredible experience it has been meeting Academy standards: not to mention screening at the IFC Center in NYC and the ArcLight in LA as part of the IDA's Docuweeks. The press has been fantastic and the crowds enthusiastic---all well worth qualifying for the race!!!!! And our run is not over by any means: we are in the process of negotiating limited theatrical distribution and getting our DVDs in order. Foreign sales are coming in for the short version of SMILE 'TIL IT HURTS. Who would have dreamed that our first sale would have been in Israel?! We are delighted to watch how the story of this story unfolds: there are twists and rare opportunities all along the way. SMILE 'TIL IT HURTS truly has a life of its own!

More to come on our lively experience at the Rocky Mountain Women's Film Festival, so stay tuned!
